We all know the “mental game” is crucial when it comes to golf. That’s why picking the right apparel is so important: you need to project confidence and style as you step onto the tee.
Fortunately, today’s golf apparel designers are more responsive than ever to the needs of women golfers. Today’s designers create apparel that allows women to move naturally as they swing the club — and look fantastic at the same time. You have more options when it comes to dressing for play. Just keep your eye open for pieces that are the right fit for you.
So what should you expect as you plan your wardrobe upgrade? I put that question to Peter Pisarri, President of golf apparel retailer Golf Sophisticate. With his gallery seat to the golf apparel industry, Pisarri appreciates how designers build on past years’ lines. “Most designers seem to take a ‘best of’ approach,” he says: they start with popular looks from the previous season and then update them with vibrant new colors or fresh new design touches.
But make no mistake: golf apparel trends are changing more rapidly than they once did. Designers know that, if they’re going to win new customers, they have to understand women’s needs and create apparel that will meet them. They’re pushing themselves to innovate: to create new looks that are functional and gorgeous at the same time.
Pisarri recommends that women who want to stay on top of golf apparel trends pay attention first to fabric (he sees more cotton apparel on the scene today, for instance) . “Fabrics are the main driver” to golf apparel trends, he says, “with cut being a close second.”
And as for color? “Colors change every 5 minutes it seems!” Pisarri says.
With all these changes happening, when should women upgrade their golf apparel wardrobes?
It depends on what you need to accomplish.
Start by taking a close look at your current golf wardrobe. Consider replacing pieces that are worn or no longer fit properly. Then look for new pieces that take advantage of the latest design innovations. “Golf apparel today is extremely durable and fashionable,” Pisarri says. “So many brands have a much more athletic fit and just look more fashion-forward that they have in the past.”
So take advantage of designers’ latest golf apparel lines. You just might find that when you swing with style you drop a few strokes from your game — and who wouldn’t love that?
