It’s estimated that 54 million people in the United States are living with some level of disability. Of that 54 million, it’s estimated that 26 million are living with a severe disability. And of that 26 million, it’s estimated that 1.6 million people in the United States are use a wheelchair on a regular basis.
Wheelchair-bound individuals are becoming more and more excited about the idea of accessorizing your their wheels. Much like you would pimp out a car or bike; disabled people are learning to express their inner style and adding a little spice to their ride.
If you or someone you know is confined to a wheelchair, you may want to add a little pizzazz to their wheels with these cool (and functional) accessories:
1. Cushions. Comfortable and stylish, wheelchair cushions can really add a unique look to your wheelchair. If you’re fun-loving, you might want to consider a polka-dot cushion, a fashionista might opt for a Burberry (or Burberry-inspired) cushion and a sports fan might like a cushion featuring their favorite team or player. The options are limitless.
2. Baskets. An essential part of every stylish wheelchair, wheelchair baskets are both functional and affordable. Baskets come in all shapes, sizes and colors and can be easily attached to the front of the device. If you don’t already have a wheelchair basket, we highly suggest investing in one.
3. Canopies. Only for the most serious wheelchair enthusiasts, canopies are a great way to add luxury and elegance to your space. Incredibly stylish and super functional (they protect you from the rays of the sun and the wetness of the rain - to some extent), a canopy is a great addition to any wheelchair.
4. Other Accessories. In addition to some of the larger accessories discussed above, there are also a number of smaller, less expensive accessories to add a little spice to your wheels. Flags, beads and ribbons (especially for children) will set your wheelchair apart from everyone else’s and will allow you to express your style in an unconventional way.
So go ahead, let loose and show the world your style.
