As the nights are drawing in and the temperature is steadily dropping, it’s time to start digging out your thermals to combat the winter chill, keeping you warm and snug as the elements do their worst. However thermal underwear isn’t designed to just keep you as warm as possible when outside as it also needs to be able to let you cool off a little when indoors too.
Thermal underwear works by trapping air in the fabric. As your body releases heat in the cold weather, the trapped air in the fabric is warmed by your body heat yet doesn’t fully escape, and this thermal layer being closest to your body helps to keep you warmer for longer. By utilising both artificial fabrics such as polyimide and natural fibres such as angora wool allows them to ‘wick’ moisture. This helps to keep you dry even when sweating as the fabric draws the moisture away from your skin and into the fabric, where it is then dispersed by evaporation.
There are a wide range of thermal garments available from simple sleeveless vests and knickers to long sleeved thermal tops and full length ‘long Johns’, or ‘long Janes’ for the ladies. Choosing how much thermal coverage you want depends on the weather. If it’s just starting to get a little chilly then choosing a sleeveless vest and briefs will probably suffice. As the weather continues to cool you can move onto a short sleeved t-shirt and longer legged undies which resemble cycle shorts. Once you’re in the grips of the deep midwinter, adopt your full length long Johns or long Janes coupled with a long sleeved thermal top.
As mentioned previously, many thermal garments get the best of both worlds by taking advantage of the unique properties of both natural and manmade fibres such as an angora and polyimide mix. However if you prefer 100% natural fibres then you can opt for garments which utilise an angora and cotton mix. These are perfect if the weather is changeable or if you find the garments with polyimide in the mix are a little too warm once you get in doors. By getting yourself a variety of thermal undergarments gives you the freedom to mix and match depending on the weather and on what you’re wearing. No longer will you feel your wardrobe is limited to only the heavier fabrics because choosing the appropriate items of thermal underwear means you’ll have a lot more freedom with your outerwear when the temperature drops.
