Remember dying your hair with Kool-Aid with you were younger? It was all about wanting to change, wanting a different look. My friends and I tried everything from pastel hues to neon brights and everything in between. Food coloring added to the Kool-Aid offered some interesting, if not gorgeous, variations.

Even though we’re more grown up now, the desire to express ourselves fashionably in living color teen apparel hasn’t changed. Especially when it comes to our stash of everyday basics in our teen apparel closets.

If you’re like me, when you find a cool girl basic clothing item that fits well, is wash and wear and comfortable, you’ll wear it everyday if you have enough of them. That’s how I feel about my favorite camis in particular.

First of all, they have to be able to go in the washer and dryer. I want them fresh smelling and soft if they’re going next to my skin. If I have to hang dry them, they get all stiff and well, you know what I mean.

The cheap ones I’ve bought at teen apparel stores at the mall may start out fitting well but often lose their contoured fit after a few wearings, stretch out in the wash or, even worse, shrink to half size in a solo washing. Hand-washing, not going to happen in my lifetime. So, I try not to make the same mistake again with my teen apparel purchases.

I’ve learned to search for quality ring-spun cotton for softness, pre-shrunk and dye-set so it won’t bleed or run. Containing elasthane or a similar nylon or poly ‘ingredient’ assures non-shrinkage.

Once you find your teen apparel ‘true love’ in camis, you won’t ever want to let them go. The next major requirement is rainbow colors that coordinate with everything in my closet. I wear camis under everything-lace tops, chiffon blouses and slouchy tees. They get dressed up and down for different occasions and are probably the most versatile piece of teen apparel ever.

Unlike the Kool-aid hair color experiments that took awhile to wash out (to the chagrin of our mothers!), you can quickly change your color to suit your mood. A quieter, subdued feeling calls for pastel hues. Party time requires neon brights. Your teen apparel should fit your needs, wants, desires.

You can find your rainbow connection for your camis, tees and tanks if you know where to look and recognize your perfect top once you find it. Then and only then should you buy it- them- and build your own rainbow for your own fashion collection!

Once you find your true love in camis, tanks and tees, never let it go. Build your own rainbow teen apparel collection!
