If you’re looking for a fun way to try out your designing skills, making your own t-shirt design can be a sure way to show off your finished product by either wearing it yourself, giving it as a gift or even selling it!

There are a huge number of reasons for designing a t-shirt. Many friends often design holiday t-shirts when they go away in a group over the summer or skiing. They can also be very popular for stag or hen weekends. Clubs and associations also often have their own merchandise and companies use them either as a gift-away promotion, advertising or for staff to wear during business events.

If you’re going to design a t-shirt yourself, be sure to read the following tips to help you get the best results.

1. Ensure the images you are using are of high quality and in a decent resolution or DPI. If you increase the size of your images to fit the garment you may end up with a blurred or pixelated finish.

2. Use vector graphics where possible. These allow for resizing without loss of quality and will give fantastic results.

3. Design the image or images you wish to apply to the t-shirt and consider using a specialist t-shirt printer. They often have professional equipment and superior quality materials, and of course, many years experience in producing quality tees.

4. Remember colours when printed can look different from when they are on your computer screen. Make a few trial runs first printing out the image onto plain paper. Use software like Photoshop to adjust the brightness and colour balance until it is perfect. Check to see if the paper manufacturer provides colour profiles which will adjust the colouring to suit.

5. Think about the colour of the garment you wish to transfer to. Will there be any clashes in the colours used in the image and that of the garment.

6. Consider the method you will use to transfer the image onto the garment. Consumer t-shirt paper is very easy and cheap to buy but will give you poor to average quality. Professional t-shirt printers can offer you the best transfer method to fit what type of design you have.

7. Think about the type of textile that you’d like to base the t-shirt on. Cotton gives a more luxurious feel and keeps the wearer keep cool. Polyester is cheaper but sometimes has a unwanted shine to the material.

Have fun and happy designing!
