There’s something magical about maxi dresses. They can be edgy and romantic, sexy and comfortable, all at the same time. That’s probably why we see so many celebrities wearing them, from shopping trips to the red carpet.
Spring 2010 witnessed a resurgence their popularity, but they’ve has never completely left the scene. Like a chameleon, they transform with the times. Plus, they’re easy to slip on and accessorize, making them perfect warm weather attire.
This summer, you’ll see five fabulous maxi dress trends:
Artsy
Features beautiful lines and color splashes that seem to belong on an artist’s canvas. You’ll notice motifs that imitate abstract painting, watercolor flowers or faded brush strokes. Typical fabrics include soft rayon, flowing chiffon and graceful silk. Check out the Diesel and Jessica Simpson collections for examples.
Classic
Imparts elegance and simplicity for any occasion. You’ll see solid jewel colors and classic designs — empire waists, flattering a-lines and Grecian goddess folds. This trend is so popular, almost every department store carries it. The classiest ones at the best prices can be found in the Gabriella Rocha collection.
Romantic
Looks fresh and sweet, with a touch of the countryside or perhaps Jane Austen. They’re mostly crafted of pure cotton. Details include eyelet, ruffles and small floral patterns. Free People’s line has several.
Tie-Dyed
Invokes hippie chic at its most authentic, straight out of the Summer of Love. There’s something nostalgic about them, like the smell of fresh coffee and the strains of Norwegian Wood playing low. Gypsy 05 has the best selection.
Tribal
Displays influences from Africa and Indonesia, and will appeal to the global nomad. Look for batik prints, stylized plants and animals, abstracts, geometrics and zigzags in rich colors. The Element collection features evocative designs with names like “Saga” and “Senegal.”
