Would you like to lose 10 pounds by this weekend? I’m sure you would! We all would… but that is not possible in a realistic and healthy way (technically you could lose the weight by becoming dehydrated but you want to lose fat - not water weight). Realistically, you should aim for a pound or two a week unless you are very overweight.
Your best bet for looking simply fantastic in that slinky designer gown is to plan in advance as far as possible. Here’s what you can do to start now and get the weight off for then:
1. This always works: write down everything you eat. Get a pretty journal or notebook to carry with you so you will find this a more enjoyable experience. When you know you are going to write what you eat, it becomes more real. You think twice before putting the cookie or the second helping in your mouth. Then you end up saving calories!
2. Know that every calorie does count. A common mistake is believing that “this one sweet roll won’t hurt”, or “one more glass of wine won’t make a difference”. It might be true that 100 little calories won’t affect your weight, but over time each 100 calories adds up.
3. Save 100 calories a day. For every 100 calories you pass on you will drop a pound at the end of the month. You might find three or four times in a day that you can save 100 calories and then you can drop three to four pounds this month.
4. Burn an extra 100 calories a day. Walking a mile can burn these for you. This will only take 15-20 minutes… if you can jog it you can be done even faster! Every additional mile you walk each day will be another pound lost after 30 days.
5. Remember to nourish your body. When you skip calories be sure you do not skip meals or nutritional foods. You’re not going to look hot in that lovely dress with thinning hair and pasty skin! Be sure to focus on getting in plenty of calcium (fortified soy milk will do if you don’t like dairy for any reason), fiber, and vitamins from lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Remember that starch (carbs) are not the enemy - they should form the base of your diet and provide B vitamins, iron and fiber. Drink 6-8 glasses of water or other calorie-free beverage each day.
Forget about crash diets. Don’t wait till the last minute. Start a healthy eating and exercise routine now and be a knock-out when it’s time to fit into that smashing dress.
