It’s great fun to be the lion at any fancy dress party - one of the best and most overlooked costumes out there. Why not become the king of the jungle for the night. But it can be a little tricky to make your own lion fancy dress costume - tricky but not impossible! You just need lots of lion-yellow furry cloth, some big white patches, a furry bit for the tail and a sewing machine handled by a talented seamstress.
Another alternative is to buy or rent one from your local costume store. But there are quite a variety of lion costumes out there. Here are a few ideas to help you along the way:
1. Roaring Lion Body Suit
The ultimate lion costume is of course the full lion body suit with realistic face, head and teeth. You can really have fun if you find one of these, especially as no one will know who you are beneath the mask!
2. Easier Lion Costume
If you can’t find or afford a full body suit lion fancy dress costume, not to worry - if you can get a cheaper body-suit that has at least the right colour scheme going on, you can easily complete the lion image with some good lion face paint and whiskers. Just make sure you have a tail too.
3. Wizard of Oz Lion Costume
Of course we can’t talk about lion costumes for long without mentioning the most loved Lion of movie screen history - the Lion in the Wizard of Oz. He was travelling with Dorothy, searching for courage. This costume is a bit more specialist, and you really have to look up some pictures to get the unique face paint right, including black bobble nose. But if you do, everyone will love you for it!
4. Sexy Lioness Costume
For the ladies, a sexy little lioness costume could be a lot of fun. You just need the whole lion-fur colour scheme, a short skirt with furry lining. Some furry lion gloves and the best touch - some lion ears on your head. A bit of lion make up wouldn’t do any harm either, and get practising with that sexy ‘growl’.
There are plenty of great ways you can dress up as a lion, or a tiger if you prefer. The tiger costume is so similar, the main difference is a smaller mane and the stripy tiger colour scheme. In either costume you will have tonnes of fun prowling around the party looking for fresh prey to devour.
And don’t forget that half of dressing up as a lion is the acting! So practice your roar, to shock everyone else at the fancy dress party.
