Ties are now accepted as part of modern men’s attire and wearing them is almost unavoidable. Though commonly worn, some men are still not into it - they find wearing ties uncomfortable. And at times, if they have done it over and over again, the simple harmless tie becomes somewhat constricting.

Now I don’t know for sure if it’s not a matter of getting used to it or not. Most of the time, men literally have no other choice. Many dress codes, like school uniforms and office wear, include ties. Formal events also require ties. For some it’s really no big deal. Anyway, it’s just an accessory. However, not all people welcome such thought. I’ll bet some men find wearing and fixing ties a daunting task.

A beautifully knotted tie, preferably with the dimple, is very nice to look at, especially with an elegant suit. You want the knot to be perfect so that the rest of the tie drapes evenly. However, not all people can craft such. Even if you have somebody else do the knot, there’s no guarantee.

There are two popular ways of tying neckties: making windsor and half-windsor knots. The Windsor knot is a wide knot ideal for wide collars and for thinner fabrics. The half-Windsor is suitable for standard collars. Knowing how to do them and execute them correctly is a skill that all men should have.

Here’s how to do a Windsor knot:

1. Wrap the tie around the neck under the collars, with the wider end at the right side and the narrow end of the tie at the left. Make sure the collars are covering the ties. Make sure also that your tie’s brand or label is underneath, face down, and is not seen by the person facing you. You don’t need to show this anyway.
2. Adjust the ties length before making the knot. Generally, the right end should be longer than the left end. However, if you have a thin neck, you can hang both ends on equal length.
3. Hold the two ends with both hands, and put the wide end on the right over the narrow end making an “X”.
4. Make the first knot by wrapping the wider end around the other end.
5. Pass the wide end behind the first knot and make another loop for the second knot. Pass the wide end through and pull it down while pushing the knot to fit your collar.

Here’s how to do a half-windsor knot:

1. Wrap the tie around your collar same as tying a Windsor knot. Make the wide end on the right and the narrow end on the left.
2. Hold the both ends and put the right end over the left forming an “X”.
3. Turn it back under and around the narrow end making a loop.
4. Pass the wide end through the knot.
5. Pull it down while pushing up the knot to your collar.
