First things first. Find the right hat that fits your personality. There are so many hats these days that finding just the right one can be quite a task to begin with. Hat stores are starting to pop up all over the place at your local malls, your favorite thrift store and across the internet. Trying them on first is key as the same with sunglasses, a new hat can make or break the outfit.
One thing to consider when picking out a hat that you will be decorating, don’t get one that you will feel bad if you ruin it. Not that you will, but this will help you in customizing your hat to your liking.
Once you select your hat, determine what color you would like to accent it with. Your color choices are vast as you can choose from the following colors: Brilliant Pink, Red Hot, Limey Green, Pistol Purple, Vibrant Blue, Orange Poppy, Citron Yellow, Halo White, Cash Money Green, and Biker Blue. They can all be found at your local EL Wire retailer. Once you figure out what color is going to make you shine, you need to order the wire and accessories.
For simple hats with strictly wire around the brim, about 5-10 feet is what you need to start. If you are looking for a little more creativity, more light, and to stand out, consider between 15 and 25 feet of wire. For elaborate hats, or a masterpiece of a hat, you may even need up to 100 feet of wire.
Let’s keep it simple and talk about something more common. Say you wanted to spice up a fedora and make it glow a bit, buy about 10-15 feet of your favorite color, a battery pack (to make it glow), and some super glue or craft glue. For information on how to attach the wire, check out EL Wire 101, everything you need to know about assembly and FAQ’s. I recommend starting with a drawing of your idea before gluing the wire, as it can become difficult once attached.
Once you drawing is in place, find a good starting and stopping point. A good starting point will also be where you determine the best place to attach your battery pack. Generally the battery packs are small enough to fit inside the hat, so hiding the juice is half of the allure. After you glue everything together, fire it up and take it to your favorite club. Please note: if you are not a social person, this is not for you. EL Wire WILL attract attention.
