Coolness is in the eye of the beholder. Well, actually that’s beauty, but it works with cool too. And now coolness includes a bow tie. Yes, you read that correctly. Once the domain of university professors, bow ties now adorn the ranks of style icons like David Beckham and Kanye West. The beauty of these accessories that these celebrities have discovered, is that they make you stand out, in a good way, with a look that works both in smart and casual settings. But you can’t just grab any old bow and expect to join the ranks of the cool. If only it were that simple. So here’s a quick guide on the types of bow ties and some tips on which to go for.
Your first option is the standard pre-tied bow tie. This comes ready-made, so all you have to do is attach it. Some come as a clip-on version that simply clips to your shirt collar, but generally they’re only made in a handful of colours so you may not have much of a choice. The more comment version has a neck strap which fastens around your neck and is adjusted with a slide attachment to fit your neck size. You’re probably going to find these in a huge array of colours and designs, so if you’re going for your first bow tie, this is your best option.
If you want to go a step further, then self-tie really exudes coolness, even if no-one else knows you’ve tied it yourself without you telling them. Anyone who can tie their own bow tie, and it’s a little complicated at first, rightly or wrongly has a smug sense of superiority over their pre-tied colleagues. Right now however, self-tie bow tie designs are rather limited, so if you’re looking for a specific design you may be disappointed. If you can find the right self-tie bow ties though, give it a try. It’s worth persevering!
Once you’ve decided on your bow tie style and design, you need to check you can pull it off. Unfortunately simply wearing a bow tie doesn’t make you cool I’m sorry to say, so you may need to experiment with a few different outfits before you get it right. To help get you there, avoid novelty bow ties at the beginning and go for a plain narrow bow tie (pre-tied is fine) with a plain shirt (white is generally foolproof in these cases). Above all, be proud of your bow tie, you’re about to be cool!
