The Quartz Revolution of the 1970s and early 1980s changed the watch industry forever. The Swiss stranglehold on the global market was finally broken, as Asian and American watchmakers embraced the new digital technology. Battery-powered watches largely replaced mechanical models, which were far more expensive to manufacture. It wasn’t long, however, until they wore out their welcome. By the end of the 1980s, most watch lovers were tired of digital timepieces. They found them flimsy and cheap. Many referred to them as disposable watches and threw them out rather than having them repaired. Consumers had learned a valuable lesson. They were finally willing to pay for quality.

Android was founded in 1991, just after the digital market began to decline. Watch lovers wanted something traditional and neoteric at the same time, and Wing Liang wanted to give it to them. A maverick designer and the company’s founder, Liang was considered by many to be a visionary - even before he designed his first Android watch. Inspired by comic books, science fiction, and modern art, the young designer makes timepieces unlike any we have ever seen. Futuristic in design and superior when it comes to craftsmanship, they have gained a loyal following in a relatively short period of time. Let us take a moment to discuss a few of their bestsellers.

Android Alien

The Alien put Android on the map. Its arresting futuristic design features twin watch dials and a silver-tone watch case that really does resemble the phlegmatic face of an extraterrestrial. The timepiece makes a strong statement and is a certified conversation piece. But the Android Alien is much more than a mere ornament, it is a well-made watch. Featuring Japanese-quartz movement, it is accurate and durable. Both eyes are protected by scratch-resistant mineral crystal watch covers. The case and watch bracelet are both made of brushed stainless steel. The dials feature luminous white hour, minute, and second hands. The Android Alien has a water resistance of 330 feet (100 meters).

Android Mystique Skeleton

Most new watchmakers steer clear of automatic timepieces. Instead of batteries, these watches are powered by wheels, cogs, and gears. As you might imagine, it is much more expensive to produce mechanical watches, since most of the work must be done by hand, rather than by machines. Wing Liang is a big fan of automatic watches. As he sees it, any technology that can survive for hundreds of years and still remain relevant is worth keeping. On the outside, the Mystique is a typical Android watch, and by typical we mean that it is atypical. The watch dial is skeletonized, which means that the wearer can see the gold-tone guts of the watch as it works.

A square scratch-resistant mineral crystal case protects all those little cogs and wheels and an alligator skin watchband closes with a stainless steel buckle clasp for a comfortable and secure fit. Like most of their timepieces, the Android Mystique is made for the outdoors. It has an impressive water resistance of 330 feet (100 meters) and luminous watch hands that can be observed in low light conditions.

Android 6G Hydraumatic Watch

Wing Liang really outdid himself when he designed the Hydraumatic series of watches.

Not only did he include iridescent crystals that change colors when they are observed from different angles, he also created a stainless steel bracelet that resembles the suspension of a motorcycle. The cuff-style bracelet simply snaps onto the wearer’s wrist for a comfortable, secure fit that never requires adjustment. But that’s not all! In addition to these newfangled design features, the Android Hydraumatic also has a brushed stainless steel case and Swiss-quartz chronograph movement. The watch hands and hour markers are treated with SuperLuminova, which makes them easy to read in low light conditions. There is even a handsome date window between the three o’clock and five o’clock hour indices. The watch is water resistant in up to 50 meters of water and comes complete with a two-year warranty.

Android Ceramic

By Android standards, the Android Ceramic offers a strikingly simple design. The square watch dial is translucent and exposes the guts or inner mechanics of the watch, all of which are cast in an elegant gold-tone. The three watch hands are white with black borders and are powered by accurate and reliable Japanese automatic movement. The eye-catching display is protected by a scratch-resistant mineral crystal watch cover that is secured by a black ceramic case and bezel. The black leather watchband closes comfortably with a stainless steel buckle clasp. Android Ceramic watches are water resistant up to 330 feet (100 meters). All of the aforementioned models can be purchased online or from select home shopping networks in the United States.
